breaking traditions November 27, 2005

so my birthdays for the last couple of years have not been spectacular. granted, they’ve never been horrible – but nothing to really squawk about. on friday, my birthday started the way i thought it would – blah. i woke up. my family uttered a couple of “happy birthdays” and that was that. in the evening, i had some cake and presents, which was nice, but that’s as far as the craziness went. end of story…. until my awesome friends stepped in.
pam and i took off for the singles dance in arlington. pam was a sweetheart and got me a flashing pin that said “birthday girl” to give the evening that certain bit of ambiance. despite the dj not being able to decide what song was being played or songs being cut off too early, i actually enjoyed myself. after that, a group of us headed to steak and shake, which was followed up by a good ‘ol sleepover at pam’s. super fun and exactly what i needed.
and that in of itself would have totally knocked my socks off and made me a happy girl. but then, jeromy (aka – wizard) surprised me on saturday night by taking me to see ICE! at the gaylord texan in grapevine (which i had never been to before). i didn’t even know about it. i’ve always seen those forwards around the holidays that have pictures of ice sculptures and whatnot, but to see it in person is awesome. oh mylanta – this stuff was amazing. it was seriously one of the most beautiful things i have ever seen in my entire life! i couldn’t stop smiling. the nativity scene and the giant angel were my favorite things. they had a large ice slide that we slid down – super neato. the gaylord itself is something to behold. it was GORGEOUS and i was in awe over all of the christmas decorations and stuff… totally up my alley! i’m still beaming from it all.
so… the birthday this year rocked. i’m a happy camper. oh – and to top it all off, i was informed that a new simpsons and family guy will be on tonight. SWEET!

as thanksgiving comes to a close, i thought it appropriate to give an update of the latest happenings…1. my dear, lazy, sweet dog, bacon, will take off an arm if a deviled egg is the target. she’s totally been digging this whole thanksgiving thing and is currently in a turkey-induced coma.
2. wastewater plants are not kind to black heels. went on an unplanned tour of a plant and chewed up my favorite pair of black shoes – total bummer.
3. family extends beyond the people you share last names with. i have the bestest friends in the whole world. to those that reach out to me on any level – huge thanks.
4. my car seat warmers are totally one of my favorite things. so, mr.-leather-seat-warmer-inventor guy – thank you. you deserve a raise.
5. i have learned that it is possible to connect with someone in a deep, genuine manner in a very short amount of time. it’s a blessing to see what human connection is capable of. i’ve also learned that you can miss something that you’ve never had.
6. my grandma is still the most awesome cook and her chocolate cake seems to improve every year.
7. i must be burning off bad technology karma. between my work email screwing up (sorry to those that lost messages to me), my home computer dying, and me having to repost this blog twice due to errors – i’m ready to scream. but we always come back, don’t we?
8. four wheelers = fun. hopefully, more to come on that.
hope everyone had a great thanksgiving. get ready for christmas – it’s just around the corner. over and out…

dude – the radio (103.7 i think) already has christmas songs on, which makes me all kinds of happy. i could seriously use the pick-me-up and there’s nothing like familiar christmas carols to make this red head smile. i may start christmas shopping this weekend so it’s all done soon. i’m so behind – by thanksgiving last year, i had it all finished. oh well – i have an excuse – i’ve been busy. i can’t wait until people get lights up – i’m still a little kid when it comes to that. i like riding around with someone and trying to find the best display in the town (rubbing hands together with glee). i need to dig around my storage unit and find my miniature christmas tree so i can set it up as soon as the turkey is off of the table next week…
a white streak, a green insect, and a new room November 14, 2005

hmm… this last saturday was far too eventful to not comment and do a blog about it. the early part of the day was spent helping my mom and grandma paint trim with good ‘ol oil-based paint. bacon wanted to get in on the action, too, and wound up with a big white streak of the stuff down her ear.

during the afternoon, dad brought in some caterpillar that we had never seen before. it was the most lime-green insect i’ve ever seen. i’m hoping some entomologist will stumble upon this and tell me what the heck it was. it’s little feet folded up and tucked together (i guess it was pretending to be a leaf around us). it was great.

i went to a birthday party for a coworker that night and when i got home, i found out that my mom had redone my room and it was such a pleasant surprise to walk in and have new window coverings, new bedspread, rug, etc. all waiting for me. since i’ve moved back home for the time being, mom’s been on a big kick of me “feeling like it’s my room.” so it was super sweet that she did that for me. bacon loves the rug and wouldn’t get off of the thing all night!

several ways to die trying November 13, 2005

Dashboard Confessional – “Several Ways To Die Trying”
Pacific Sun, you should have warned us, it gets so cold here.
And the night can freeze, before you set it on fire.
And our flares go unnoticed.
Dimminished, faded just as soon as they are fired.
We are, we are, intrigued. We are, we are, invisible.
Oh, how we’ve shouted, how we’ve screamed, take notice, take interest, take me with you.
But all our fears fall on deaf ears.
Tonight, they’re burning the roads they built to lead us to the light.
And blinding our hearts with their shining lies,
while closing our caskets cold and tight. But I’m dying to live.
Pacific sun, you should have warned us, these heights are dizzying,
and the climb can kill you long before the fall.
And our trails go unmarked and unmapped and covered
just as soon as they are crossed.
We are, we are, intriguing. We are, we are, desirable.
Oh how we’ve shouted, how we’ve screamed,
take notice, take interest, take me with you.
But all our fears fall on deaf ears.
Tonight, they’re burning the roads they built to lead us to the light.
And blinding our hearts with their shining lies,
while closing our caskets cold and tight. But I’m dying to live.
